Kiel, Germany — The first leg of The Ocean Race Europe 2025 has begun with an unexpected and dramatic incident: a high-speed collision between Team Holcim PRB and Allagrande MAPEI Racing just minutes after the start.
Both IMOCAs have had to return immediately to the port of Kiel, where their shore teams are working against the clock to assess the damage and plan repairs. Luckily, all the crew are safe.
“It’s very sad, especially after all the team’s effort to be here… We’ve only covered a mile of the race,” commented Ambrogio Beccaria, skipper of Allagrande MAPEI Racing.
From Team Holcim PRB, skipper Rosalin Kuiper confirmed that they have been forced to suspend the stage due to damage to the hull:
“It is very disappointing for the whole team and for our competitors. We are going to repair as soon as possible and hopefully be on the starting line in Portsmouth.”
Official Protest and Possible Re-Entry
The race director, Phil Lawrence, reported that Holcim PRB has filed a formal protest against Allagrande MAPEI Racing. The case will be evaluated by the International Jury on a date to be determined.
Both teams hope to rejoin the competition, although the decision will depend on the extent of the repairs.
Battle at the Front
Meanwhile, the action on the water did not stop. Biotherm was the first to cross the Kiel Lighthouse scoring gate, securing two points, followed by Paprec Arkéa (1 point).
The Canadian team Canada Ocean Racing – Be Water Positive surprised by placing third, ahead of Team Malizia and Team Amaala.
Upcoming Challenges
The fleet is now heading north, facing strong winds, complex currents and the passage under the iconic Great Belt Bridge in Denmark. Everything points to this first stage continuing to offer spectacular images and intense emotions.
